Chainsaw cutting a trunk, chips flying

Stump grinding without a dug-up garden

A stump that is left behind sits there for ten years or more, sends up root suckers and gets in the way of the lawnmower. Digging it up tears up half the lawn.

The stump grinder instead mills the stump down on site, below ground level, and what is left is a hole of chippings that is filled in.

After that you can sow grass or plant anew straight away.

How stump grinding works

The grinder is a machine with a rotating cutting wheel that mills the stump into chippings, a few centimetres at a time.

We normally grind down to between ten and twenty centimetres below the surface, enough for a lawn and most plantings.

If something with deep roots is to be planted on the same spot, we grind deeper.

The grinder is compact and gentle on the lawn. Afterwards we level the ground.

The chippings can stay as fill or be removed, and the stump can be ground on the same day the tree is felled.

What the grinder does not take

The grinder takes the stump and the thickest roots closest to the trunk. Roots further out are left in the ground, where they break down by themselves over a few years.

Stones, concrete and cables in the ground must be known to us in advance: that is why we always ask whether there is drainage, electricity or fibre near the stump.

Questions about stump grinding

Can you grind stumps that are old?

Yes, old stumps are often easier because the wood has started to soften. Fresh oak and beech stumps are the hardest, but the grinder copes with them too.

How big a hole is left?

Roughly the diameter of the stump plus the thickest roots, and a couple of decimetres deep. The hole is filled with the chippings and soil, and after one season it is no longer visible.

Do I get the RUT deduction on stump grinding?

Yes, stump grinding on your own plot gives a RUT deduction (a Swedish tax relief on labour costs for household services) on half the labour cost, just like tree felling.

What else we do

The jobs often go together: the tree comes down, the stump is ground and the brash leaves with us the same day.

We come out and look at the tree

The home visit costs nothing and you get a fixed price with the RUT tax deduction already applied. We normally reply within one working day.
